Deborah,
Is Baron Cole listed in the Domesday Books?

Dear Tim,
No one would be called Baron Cole - he may be a Baron, but he would be referred to as Lord -----.
In addition you should realise that surnames per se didn't really evolve until after Domesday times.
The surname COLE is from Middle English and is a derivative of the pet name of Nicholas; or from a personal name derived from the Old English byname 'cola' denoting someone of swarthy appearance.
As to your Baron's appearance in the Domesday book - I have no idea - the book is thousands of pages long, - it is possible to buy CDs of the images of each page, but remember much of it is written in Latin or 'old English, which is very difficult to read and understand. Try putting "Domesday Book" in your search engine for further websites and more information.

Dear Deborah,
Maybe I could try from another angle. I have a copy of the will of Humfrye Cole, which I have found his name spelled Humphre,Humphrie,Humphrey,Humphries, and Humfrie. The will shows him living in Tillingham in the county of Essex Clarke in 1623. He died in 1624. Maybe I could start with him and go backwards. Let me know what you think. Thank you, Tim Walker

Dear Tim,
Can you document proof that you are in fact connected to this Humphrey COLE? If so, then this is the logical way to go backwards, and not rely on other's research which may well be full of assumptions and errors.
Firstly, take no notice of the spelling of Humphrey's name - formalised spelling did not really exist until the late 18th century, and even then was still subjective. Remember that the majority of the population could not read or write - usually priests, scholars and scribes did all the writing and so would write down what they heard. In addition, most formal documents pre 1600 were written in Latin, and if you look at old registers, you will see some interesting attempts by priests to 'Latinise' anglo-saxon names. Humfridus was a common 'latinisation'
Onto Humphrey, deceased 1624 - the IGI has an entry for Humphrey COLE who died in Tillingham, Essex in May 1624. It shows that his parents were William COLE & ELizabeth DEARDS. Your first step should be to examine the Tillingham Essex registers to determine if he was buried there, and confirm that this entry is factual and not assumption. Surviving Tillingham registers only go back to 1614. Look at any evidence in the will as to other family members - lands owned, locations etc. These are all clues. Many of the records on the IGI that are not extracts from Parish registers are often 'guestimates' - the IGI also shows potential birthdates for this Humphrey between 1572 and 1580.
You may find you need to employ a professional researcher who specialises in mediaeval genealogy.
I must mention that the jump from Essex back to Devon seems unusual - that would have been a vast distance in those days over 300 miles,- which they may have shortened by taking the sea route.

Dear Deborah,
This I know for sure. I am a descendent of Humphrey Cole. I have in my information also that his Father was William and his mother was Elizabeth Deards. According to what I have, Humphrey made his will on Nov 4,1623, and proved on May 17,1624. He was of Tillingham, Essex.(Dean and Chapter of St Paul Register D. 1608-1633). Humphrey has his one of his sons mentioned in his will, his name William, now living in VA (if he be living) he leaves him 3 acres of freehold more or lesse with a new barne built upon it called Sewdirs Head in Tillingham & next adjoining to a cottage & 2 acres of Coppihould land called Finches & Doth belonging unto his brother Robert Cole. I have researched William on forward and I know that is my line. After I get past Humphrey's parents, things seem to be inaccurate. But what I have is: Humphrey's parents: William & Elizabeth.
William's parents: William Cole & Ann Colles. William was born in London and Ann was born in Bradwell,Buckingham. William born: 1520?
William's parents: Thomas Cole & Elizabeth Hargraves, both from London. Thomas born:1494?
Thomas parents: John Cole & Mary Archdeacon, origin unknown. John born:1468?
John's parents: Gentleman William Cole & Elizabeth Weston.Gentleman William born:between 1430-1439
Gentleman William parents: Gent John & Jane Meriot
Gent John born:1411?
Gent John's parents: Knight John Cole & Agnes Fitz Waryn. Knight John born:1383?
Knight John's parents: William Cole & Margaret Beaupell or Bewpell?
William born:1357?
William's parents:Knight John Cole & Ann Bodrugan.
Shows him a Knight of Nythway
Knight John born:1331 or 1338?
Knight John's parents: John Cole mother unknown.
John born:1305? in Devon/Cornwall? Died in County of Devon & Cornwall.
John's parents:Roger & mother unknown.
Roger born:1285? in Coleton,Chumleigh,Devonshire. Died:unknown in same place.
Roger's parents:Roger & mother unknown.
Roger born:1235? in Coleton,Chumleigh,Devonshire.
Died:1302? in same place.
He married in 1280?
Roger's parents:William & mother unknown.
William born:1210? in Hutenesleigh,Devonshire.
Died:1245? in same place.
He married:1235
William's parents:Roger & mother unknown.
Roger born:1185? in same place.
Roger's parents:William & Ysabella.
William born:1160? in same place.
Died:1243? in same place.
William's parents:Baron? & mother unknown.
Baron born:1040? in Hampshire
Died:1080? place unknown.
I don't know how accurate all of this is but that's all I have.
