HALL, EDWARDS, COX, PYLE, STONE, DOBLE

Posted by Janet (Hall) Doi
I am searching for relatives with information on William Hall who was a town councilman in Exmouth, Devon in the 1930-1940's. He came to Exmouth from Dorset, having been born there in 1890.
And, in particular the family of his wife, Annie (Edwards)Hall, who was born in Exmouth in 1891. She died 6 Nov 1959 and they are both buried at St. John's in the Wilderness churchyard in Withycombe.
Annie Elizabeth (Edwards)Hall's father was John William Edwards, also of Exmouth. He had a brother named William Job Edwards who was a merchant mariner, Methodist church leader, foreman of the Docks Ironworks, and founder & President of the Exmouth Cooperative Indurstrial Society. The brothers were born around 1851, and their father was believed to be Matthew Edwards (born 1818) who married Ann Stone (born 1816) in East Budleigh.
Related to this family was Thomas Cox, who it is believed, was married to Ann (Stone) Edwards sister, Jane (nee Stone). It is thought that Thomas Cox and wife went to Australia when young, earned a fortune with a store in the outback there, and returned to England childless (losing, it is said, twelve children in Australia). They left their wealth to nieces and nephews including John Edwards who started the Marpool Dairy in Exmouth with the money.
John Edwards married Emma Jane Pyle in 1875 and her father was James Pyle & her mother, Elizabeth (Doble) Pyle, was born in Feniton, Devon.
I would like anyone knowing of information concerning any of these people to please contct me. Thank You, Janet (Hall) Doi of St. Louis, Missouri, USA. My E-mail address: jeddoi@msn.com

Deborah, Thank you for the information. Yes, the John J. Edwards in question is my great grandfather. I have access to this census. Am trying to obtain more information on his father. J. Doi
If you obtain John J. EDWARDS' birth certificate, it will give his father's name.
His Mother, Ann is shown in 1881:

You can use the link below to search for John EDWARDS' birth.
Deborah, Thank you again for this information. I suspect that the Thomas COSE you mentioned in the 1881 Census is really the Thomas COX listed in the 1891 Census with the same family listing. This man would be the husband of Jane (nee EDWARDS) who had a sister Ann, and she was a widow living with them in both census records. She was John William EDWARDS mother.
His father was Matthew EDWARDS, as listed in the 1851 Census. It is this Matthew EDWARDS that I need more information on.
Also, I need information about Thomas and Jane COX during the years they lived in Australia. J. Doi
